Wood with brown patina, partly flaked; male and female figures standing one above the other in powerful stance, heads supported by their hands, heart-shaped faces with tribe-typical features. Gateway post for the assembly hut used in the inauguration rites of male and female tribal youth. Rare ritual object with subtle erotic expression, on a round integrated wooden base; minor age-related damage.

Erotic Circumcision Bench Figure

Cameroon, Tikar tribe, 19th/20th century,

Wood with earthy red patina; imposing figurative representation. In reclining position, the figure’s body was used for ritual initiation and circumcision rites, in this case as a seat for boys undergoing circumcision. A cultural and medical-historical relic; minor age-related signs of use.
