CHINA
Khotan Carpet
East Turkestan, historic Silk Road region, Xinjiang Province, PR China, 19th century.
Beautiful nomadic carpet in a classic tent size, gray-blue field with a dense, symmetrically structured pomegranate pattern with scrolling vines and leaves. In China, the pomegranate is a symbol of fertility because of its many seeds; together with the peach and the Buddha’s hand citron it forms the Three Auspicious Fruits, symbols of abundance.
