Large Apothecary Cabinet of the Former Imperial Court Pharmacy

Hardwood with red lacquer finish; sturdy frame construction in a compact, two-part form. The divided front with an upper section featuring a large, wide compartment for storing medicine vessels; below are three rows of eight triple-compartment drawers (24). The lower section with five rows of eight triple-compartment drawers (40); in the base area four double-compartment drawers. All drawers bear Chinese labels indicating the medicines and raw medical materials formerly stored for the preparation of remedies. Round brass fittings in the traditional auspicious coin form with movable metal rings; raised on short feet. A rare medical-historical piece in good condition with an interesting historical provenance.

Court Cabinet

Sturdy frame construction in Manchurian walnut, in an elegant reddish-brown tone; the extreme temperature fluctuations of Manchuria produce the dense wood grain characteristic of this type of furniture. Two-door front interrupted by a central stile with delicate relief carving; artistically designed and arranged floral motifs, including magnolia and cherry blossoms as symbols of spring. The panels are framed by a fine, sculptural meander border; in the base section, five scholar’s objects likewise enclosed by a meander border. Interior fitted with two drawers and two large compartments; in the base a cleverly concealed wide secret compartment. Raised on four tall, stepped feet; partly decorated brass fittings with movable handles. Perfect condition; an extremely rare example of the so-called court seasonal cabinets in museum-quality collector’s condition.

Frame construction in hardwood; the front finished in the finest lacquer work, partly heightened with color, depicting courtly scenes in palace gardens. Two-door cabinet enclosing three compartments, with a round central brass fitting and angular door hinges. The base section is openwork carved, showing “two lions holding a long Shouauspicious emblem,” which they guard; minor age-related signs of wear.
